John Edmondson has published several books of walks within an hour's travel from Kendal. Each walk includes a photograph depicting a scene from the walk. A summary outlines its features and points of interest. QR (Quick Response) links are included to what3words to identify the walks starting points and to Ordnance Survey route maps (gpx files). This enables these items to be scanned from the book then viewed on a smart phone or tablet. Web addresses (URLs) of the start point and OS route map are shown so that these items can be accessed directly from an electronic device.
K Walks is a collection of 31 walks all within 7 miles travelling distance from Kendal.

Walkbase Kendal contains a selection of walks to suit most abilities, ranging from 3 to 12.5 miles in length and covering each of the above walking areas. All of the walks are within easy reach of the town; usually less than an hour away. Many can be reached by bus and some by rail. Unlike other books, Walkbase Kendal features walks using less frequented paths, so even on those that are close to the ‘honeypot’ places you won’t encounter many other people. Guidance is included on how to select the most suitable walk. The walks are presented in a straightforward way using text and simple maps so that they are easily followed with a minimum amount of reading.
Walkbase Kendal is in two volumes. The first contains 67 walks numbered WK01 to WK67. Book 2 contains 50 walks numbered WK101 to WK150. Go to the WALK LIST page to see the full list of walks and which book they are in. The list also includes walks that are published in K WALKS but not in Walkbase Kendal.

All of the above books can be purchased from Amazon. Just search by the book title and author (John Edmondson) or use the buttons. Some are available as e-books.
All of the walks listed are available on waterproof laminated A5 sheets. These can be purchased directly from the author. Use the above SEND EMAIL button to specify your requirements. They cost £1 per walk sheet (+p&p). Orders of 15 or more sheets include a ring binder or plastic box, as preferred.
John's next book will be Cumbria Way Hike. Like High Street Hike it is a series of 1-day circular and linear walks with each walk beginning from where the previous one finished. Cumbria Way Hike follows the 73-mile Long Distance path from Ulverston to Carlisle. Each of the walks is of a moderate standard, between 4 and 13 miles in length and up to 2,600 feet of ascent. The book will be published following reopening of the last section of the Cumbria Way (to Carlisle), which is currently closed.
Here's a bit of background to the books. I first published K Walks, the first edition of which contained 25 walks all within 5 miles of Kendal town centre. I followed this up with Kk Walks, which contains 87 walks totalling 1,000 kilometres, mainly within 20 miles of Kendal but greater than 5 miles away. Printing and Amazon royalty charges meant that the lowest price I could sell this book is £25. Subsequently, by reducing the page size book and adding further improvements I have been able to reduce the price to £20. All of the walks in Kk walks and 17 of those in K Walks are included in the Walkbase Kendal books. The books are available in electronic format (for Kindle readers and tablets). The e-version of Walkbase Kendal does not contain photos. There are photos in the e-versions of K Walks and KK walks but be warned - the large file sizes (23,278 KB and 19,480 KB) can take a while to download and use up a lot of memory on your device. Walkbase Kendal has a smaller file size (4,913 KB) but the absence of photos reduces its appeal, so I haven't produced an e-version of Walkbase Kendal Book 2. For practical purposes, it's easiest to use the laminated walk sheets in conjunction with a smartphone or tablet. The second edition of K Walks is an improved format of the first edition and includes 6 more walks.
Improvements to the books are an ongoing process. The layout of the text and style of maps has been improved with each successive book and with the walk sheets. Books published by Amazon are printed to order so they can be updated by the author at any time so that allows me to make amendments. Despite numerous re-readings and re-writes, I still find mistakes or lack of clarity, so if you spot any please let me know!
